Highlights for 2008
  • Music sessions in the House on Sunday afternoons beginning May.
  • Our costumed footman and housekeeper will return on holiday Monday's.
  • In May and June we are delighted to be hosting a fascinating exhibition of embroidered samplers, bringing together some beautiful nineteenth century samplers from museums across the East of Scotland.
  • Special interest tours on a variety of topics including Hopetoun's portraits, the tapestry collection or the dining customs through the ages on Sunday afternoons beginning May.
  • Drop-in sessions on Wednesday and Sunday afternoons with activities such as quill penning, butter churning and pond dipping. These are held in July and August during school holidays.

Moth Night & Up Close to Moths (Ranger Activity)

Come and learn more about these fascinating nocturnal invertebrates. We start on Saturday night with a talk from Duncan Davidson, a local moth enthusiast, about moths and moth trapping, then we go into the grounds to see the moth traps and identify what species we have caught.

Then, if you are keen, come back again on Sunday morning to see what other moths have visited our traps during the night. Join us for both events or just the one!

All moths are released unharmed.

Cost: Adults £3.70; Children £2.20

Cost covers both days and includes grounds entrance charge and coffee

Sleeping Beauty Children's Outdoor Theatre

Chapterhouse Theatre Company are adapting this family favourite in a style that comes close to the Famous Five whilst still celebrating the original fairytale romance. It will last around one and a half hours and includes a fairytale fancy dress parade during the interval with members of the cast. We are adding to the fun by arranging a special trail through our woods for children to enjoy after the show.

Hopetoun's Terrific Trees (Ranger Activity)

Come along to Hopetoun for the afternoon and learn more about the natural history of Hopetoun's wonderful collection of specimen trees. Featured trees include the Morinda Spruce, the Cedar of Lebanon, the Giant Red Wood and the Chinese Red Barked Birch.

Join our ranger as he explores the depths of Hopetoun's woods searching for tracks, trails, signs and footprints of the animals, which make their homes at Hopetoun. We will be keeping an eye out for foxes, deer, squirrels, wood mice, sparrow hawks and lots more!

We are delighted to be hosting the Race for Life again and the route this year has been altered to take in more of the magnificent grounds surrounding the House.

This is the last day the House and Grounds will be open this season.  Come along and support the 10K runners, enjoy a look around the house, a stroll in the grounds and an afternoon in the Tea Room.  The House will close (apart from special events) today and will re-open on Good Friday 2009.

Hopetoun House and Black Ness Castle Joint Walk (Ranger activity)

Join Hopetoun's and Historic Scotland's rangers as we walk from Black Ness to Hopetoun House. Along the way we will discuss the history of both properties and visit the Special Protection Area. We will see various wading birds, red deer and many forms of fascinating fungi on our journey. This is a one off event is sure to be memorable and eventful.
